Supporting Communities. Responding to Sudden Loss.

The Tom Aynsley Foundation is an Australian registered charity established in memory of Tom Aynsley. Our work reflects both the life Tom lived and the circumstances of his death.

We support sustainable community development in coffee-growing regions of Papua New Guinea, and we promote awareness, understanding and community support in response to sudden and unexplained cardiac death.

These are distinct areas of work, but they are connected by a common purpose: supporting people and communities in moments that shape lives.

Our Purpose

The Foundation works through a small number of focused projects and initiatives that are practical, grounded and carefully governed.

Our activities fall under two core pillars:

Supporting Sustainable Communities

We work alongside coffee-growing communities in Papua New Guinea to support education, agricultural sustainability and long-term economic opportunity.

This includes funding and assisting local projects that strengthen community resilience and improve outcomes for families who depend on small-scale coffee production.

Responding to Sudden and Unexplained Cardiac Death

Following Tom’s sudden passing, the Foundation expanded its purpose to include support for activities relating to unexplained cardiac death and related causes of unexpected cardiac arrest.

This work focuses on:

  • awareness and understanding

  • community connection and support

  • partnering with others to reduce isolation and improve responses to sudden loss

Our aim is not to replace medical or clinical services, but to support people, families and communities navigating events that often come without warning or explanation.

How We Work

The Foundation delivers its work through clearly defined projects and initiatives, each with a specific purpose and governance framework.

Current work includes:

  • community-based projects in Papua New Guinea

  • education and regeneration initiatives in coffee-growing regions

  • awareness and community initiatives in Australia, including Walk for Life events

All activities are undertaken in line with the Foundation’s charitable objects and governance standards.

Our Projects and Initiatives

We focus on a small number of initiatives where we believe the Foundation can make a meaningful contribution.

  • Unam Regeneration Project (Papua New Guinea)

Supporting sustainable livelihoods and community renewal in a coffee-growing region of PNG.

  • Bauka School Project (Papua New Guinea)

Supporting education access for children in remote coffee-producing communities.

  • Walk for Life – Melbourne

A community-led initiative providing connection and shared understanding for those affected by sudden and unexplained cardiac death.

Tom Aynsley - New Years day 2017

WHO WAS TOM AYNSLEY?

Tom was deeply curious about the world and the people in it.

Coffee became one expression of that curiosity — its origins, its cultures, and the communities whose lives and livelihoods depend on it. Through this interest, Tom chose to pursue a career in the industry and developed a strong appreciation for sustainability and the importance of supporting communities over the long term.

Tom passed suddenly and unexpectedly from an unexplained cardiac event in March 2017, just one month short of his 25th birthday. The Foundation was established in his memory following his death. Over time, and in recognition of the circumstances of Tom’s passing, the Foundation has extended its work to include initiatives that promote awareness, understanding and community support in relation to unexplained cardiac death and related conditions.
